My discourse community includes my Greensburg FFA
chapter in Greensburg, Indiana. FFA used to be Future Farmers of America but is
now known as the National FFA Organization. I am particularly going to focus on members
that are participating in the district leadership contest. Many members compete amongst each other in
the hopes of advancing to the state level. District leadership contests is an
event that takes place each year usually in March. It is a time where members
are able to show their leadership skills and compete among others around the
district. Within district 12 in Indiana, the schools involved include: Greensburg,
North Decatur, South Decatur, South Ripley, Madison, Jac-Cen-del, Batesville,
East Central, and Switzerland County. ]
The FFA creed was written by E.M. Tiffany in 1930. The FFA creed was adopted at the 3rd National Convention. E.M. Tiffany was born in 1883 in Linden, Kansas. He was the chief teacher in the Department of Agriculture Education in World War one. E.M. Tiffany impacted the lives of millions of students when he wrote the creed.
I joined this discourse community freshman year of high school, August 2010. I would consider myself an expert in this category. I participated in this community for four years and to this day still contribute in many ways. I know almost all the INS and out to be successful within the contests. FFA means a lot to me. FFA is a place that gives people a sense of belonging and everyone is a family. FFA is a chance to gain lifelong experiences, leadership skills, and many friendships. FFA is an organization to help benefit students and gain lifelong skills.
An outsider’s opinion of FFA might be very positive. I would say they would feel as if FFA is an FFA is an organization that impacts many lives of young students and one day they will be the leaders of agriculture. I would say my discourse community is located within the National FFA Organization. I say this because the Greensburg FFA chapter is within the Indiana State Organization and that is then within the National FFA Organization. Why do so many people join the Greensburg FFA chapter each year? Let alone why are there thousands of members each year within the Indiana FFA State Association? This meets all of Swale’s 6 standards for a discourse community. The common public goal is to allow members to gain leadership skills and become the future of agriculture. There are many mechanisms of intercommunication that take place. There are monthly meetings within the chapters, chapter events, the officer team has a group me going that allows them to all talk to each other at the same time, and all members see each other at school in the classroom. It uses participatory mechanisms primarily to provide information and feedback by allowing the advisor to interact with the members on a daily basis. There are many genres taking place in this community. The content of the event will change but it will always be the same by the process that takes place and how it works For example in crops judging, the crops mounts will always be the same as in a piece of cardboard with a laminated crop sample on the front but the crop sample is always different.
Within the Greensburg FFA there are many different forms of lexis that takes place. Whether it be crops judging, livestock judging, animal science demonstration and many more it is always happening. For example within crops judging they call crop samples crop mounts and someone from outside of FFA might not know what they are talking about. There is a high ratio of experts to novices. New members join every day and the old members are excelling more each year in their demonstrations and CDE’s. My interviews will happen over the span of my spring break. I am hopefully going to do them after the leadership contests. How I will perform my participant observation will be that I am the judge of their contest areas. I will be the one judging and interviewing them.
